Consumer confidence index in November

Economic climate index: 74.73 pts., +6.95 pts.
In November 2009 the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) increased by 4.1 points, in comparison with October, to 86.91, according to research carried out by Ipsos. The fact that the index is below 100 points means that there are more pessimists than optimists among Polish consumers.
According to Ipsos, the sentiment exhibited by Polish respondents has improved modestly in recent months but there have been periodical reverses. The trend has been driven mainly by the improvement in the assessment of the general economic climate, which rose by almost 7 points in November in comparison with the level recorded during the previous month. Consumers are also less afraid that the unemployment rate will rise during subsequent months – only 39% expect it to increase, whereas the figure was 45% a month ago. Ipsos insists that the improvement reflects the fact that respondents who had expected a deterioration in the economic situation are now seeing stabilisation.
The propensity-to-buy index showed the least significant increase: 2.3 points, to about 95. However, some groups of respondents, including entrepreneurs and residents of medium-sized towns, reported increases in willingness to purchase durable goods.
The consumer confidence index (CCI) can range from 0 to 200 points. The calculation of this index is based on the answers given to five questions asked in an Ipsos survey. The survey was carried out between 5 and 12 November on a random representative quantitative sample of 1,008 Poles of 15 or more years of age. The statistical error for this figure is no greater than (+/-) 3.1% at a confidence level of 0.
